Nancy Ambrose
Nancy Ambrose, MBA

Nancy Ambrose was Assistant Director of Center Operations for the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) and oversaw the evaluation centers where the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Step 2 Clinical Skills assessment is administered.

Ms. Ambrose earned her MBA from the Fox School of Management at Temple University, Philadelphia, PA.

M. Brownell Anderson

M. Brownell “Brownie” Anderson is Vice President of International Programs with NBME, where she works to create a culture of assessment by aligning outcomes to student assessments with medical schools around the world. She is currently helping medical schools and organizations in Brazil, China, and Kazakhstan to build a stronger culture of assessment.

A frequent author, educator and speaker around the world, Ms. Anderson is the editor of Really Good Stuff, a biannual collection of medical education innovation reports. She was a member of the Arabian Gulf University faculty, Manama, Bahrain, for several years and has worked with the Foundation for Advancement of International Medical Education and Research.

Ms. Anderson received her degrees from Washington University in St. Louis, MO, and the University of Illinois at Chicago and was employed at the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine, Springfield, IL, from 1978 to 1983.

Kathy Angelucci, MS

Kathy Angelucci is currently the Managing Editor, International Programs, at the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS), where she oversees the examination development process for the Singapore program, ensuring that all examinations meet quality standards and that participating specialty item banks contain high-quality test questions.

Prior to joining ABMS, Ms. Angelucci worked at NBME for more than 20 years in several test development roles, most recently as Manager of Developmental Projects and System Enhancements. She has in-depth expertise and technical skills in examination development and publication, media development and acquisition, and item banking and web-based testing. 

Ms. Angelucci received a BA in English from LaSalle University and an MS in Technical and Science Communication from Drexel University, Philadelphia, PA.

Colleen Canavan
Colleen Canavan, MS

Colleen Canavan contributed to the research and development of multiple observational assessment programs during her tenure at NBME. As part of this work, she delivered training on professionalism assessment and feedback to physicians across the US. 

Ms. Canavan holds a BA in Sociology from Vassar College, Poughkeepsie, NY, and an MS in Library and Information Science from Drexel University, Philadelphia, PA. 

Amanda Clauser, MSEd, EdD

Amanda Clauser is a Psychometrician with NBME, where she specializes in test design, equating, score report development, and other operational testing issues.

Her research interests include evidence-centered design, applied generalizability theory and performance assessment.

She earned an MSEd from the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, and an EdD in Educational Measurement and Psychometrics from the University of Massachusetts.

David Disbrow runs NBME’s Center for Innovation, which serves as an incubator for disruptive ideas and concepts that may extend the boundaries of NBME strategic principle areas.

He started his career with the ECFMG in 1998, and he helped to train standardized patient trainers and patients at the Clinical Skills Evaluation Collaboration's six exam centers across the country. He joined NBME in 2012 to help create the Educational Design and Development Program with Gail Furman.

Mr. Disbrow holds an MACM degree from the Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California, Los Angeles.

Marc Gessaroli, PhD

Marc Gessaroli is Principal Measurement Scientist at NBME, where his research focuses on the use of multidimensional models to address psychometric issues in testing.

Dr. Gessaroli received a PhD in Educational Measurement and Applied Statistics at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto. For 10 years, he was a faculty member at the University of Ottawa, where he taught graduate courses in educational measurement, applied statistics, and psychometrics before joining NBME.

Gayle Gliva-McConvey is Director of the Center for Simulation & Immersive Learning and the Professional Skills Teaching and Assessment Center at Eastern Virginia Medical School, Norfolk, VA.

Richard Feinberg

Richard Feinberg is a Senior Psychometrician with NBME, where he leads and oversees the data analysis and score reporting activities for large-scale high-stakes licensure and credentialing examinations. He is also an Assistant Professor at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, Philadelphia, PA, where he teaches a course on Research Methods and Statistics.

His research interests include psychometric applications in the fields of educational and psychological testing.

He earned a PhD in Research Methodology and Evaluation from the University of Delaware, Newark, DE.

Gail Furman is Director of Educational Design and Development for USMLE’s Step 2 Clinical Skills examination, which uses standardized patients to evaluate the clinical skills of those seeking medical licensure in the US.

Dr. Furman has more than 20 years of experience in medical education as a professor and director of a clinical skills center, working with standardized patients and designing Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs).

She earned a PhD from Saint Louis University, St. Louis, MO.

Joseph Grande

Joseph Grande has served as director for the Pathology and Cell Biology course taught to first-year students at Mayo Clinic School of Medicine, Rochester, MN, for more than 25 years. His previous roles include Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at Mayo Clinic School of Medicine, 2007-2013, and Chair of the Step 1 Committee for NBME, 2008-2011.

Dr. Grande currently serves on the Executive Board of NBME. He is a reviewer for many education-related journals and is currently on the editorial board of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Education. He also chairs a study section for the National Institutes of Health that reviews educational conference grant applications.

Kathy Holtzman is Director of Assessment and International Operations for the ABMS, where she provides leadership and project management for international programs and examinations.

Prior to joining ABMS, Ms. Holtzman worked for 35 years at NBME, most recently as Assistant Vice President in the Assessment Programs unit. She has extensive experience with assessment of medical decision-making skills with multiple-choice tests and simulation formats; methods for development and review of test material; design and introduction of computer-based and web-based tests; and development of new assessment formats, some utilizing multimedia. In addition, she has conducted item-writing workshops at medical schools, specialty boards and professional conferences nationally and internationally.

Ms. Holtzman holds a bachelor’s degree from Tennessee Technological University, Cookeville.

Kieran Hussie is the Manager of Multimedia Services for Test Development with NBME, where he has managed the development, acquisition, processing and standardization of multimedia formats and applications for use in NBME-produced assessments.

After working for the Warner Brothers Network television station in Philadelphia, he joined the testing industry with Assessment Systems Inc. (ASI) and Promissor, which became a part of Pearson.

Mr. Hussie earned a BA in Communications from Temple University, Philadelphia, PA.

Daniel Jurich

Daniel Jurich is a Psychometrician with NBME, where he manages the psychometric activities for various licensure and in-training examinations.

His primary research interests include improving the diagnostic utility of assessments to aid in tailoring remediation and data forensic techniques to examine test security.

He received a PhD in Assessment and Measurement from James Madison University, Harrisonburg, VA.

Peter Katsufrakis is a board-certified family physician and Senior Vice President for Assessment Programs with NBME. His responsibilities at NBME include oversight of the Medical School Services and Medical Education and Health Profession Services programs, International Programs,
the Post-Licensure Assessment Service, and the United States Medical Licensing Examination program.

He is a past Associate Dean for Student Affairs at the Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California.

Dr. Katsufrakis received a BA from the University of California, Berkeley, an MBA from the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, and an MD from the University of California, San Diego.

He served his internship and residency in family practice at Santa Monica Hospital, and is a Diplomate of the American Board of Family Medicine.
